Dorothy May Broad

BROAD, Dorothy May - Dorothy May Broad was born on September 23, 1926 in Wynyard, Saskatchewan to Arthur and Margaret Broad the fourth of five children. After high school she went to Saskatoon to begin nurse’s training but by Christmas knew that nursing was not her calling. Early in 1945 she enlisted in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps and was sent to Ontario where she learned skills to be a stenographer. She was discharged in 1946. She worked in Cupar at the school unit office and met Richard Wingfield from the neighbouring town of Dysart. They were married on May 24, 1948 and had four children, Don, Corinne, Norma and James. They moved around a lot before settling in Kinistino. Dorothy worked in the Kinistino school unit office for a few years and then in medical records in the town’s hospital until she retired in 1990. She liked to be active and enjoyed curling, skating and later carpet bowling as well as many other activates. She also like to knit and crochet and made many afghans including one for each grandchild. She loved to travel and after retirement she and Dick went on many bus tours until his stroke made that impossible. She was involved in local organizations over the years including CGIT, Brownies leader assistant, United Church, Eastern Star, Kinistino Cemetery board, Donor’s Choice, the Half Century Club and Kinistino Community Church. Dorothy’s family always came first. She loved to cook and bake and would have the family over but you couldn’t leave until you played some games. Her friends were also important to her. She was a strong person and faced adversity head on. When Norma had a brain tumor at six years old which returned at 30 years old and was by her side. When Richard had a stroke she was at his bedside also when he moved to the Jubilee Lodge she went to visit him every day for nine and half years. She lived on her own until March 2014 when she moved to the Weldon Country Villa and then in December 2015 to the Kinistino Jubilee Lodge. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Richard, daughter Norma, grandson David, her parents, her brothers Alfred, Eddie and Wally, her sister Elsie Smith, brothers-in-law Leslie Smith, Howard Wingfield, Deane Davison, Douglas Bruce, sister-in-law Margaret Bruce.
