Ruth King

KING, Ruth - January 9, 1924 - April 26, 2016 Auntie Ruth, the youngest of 8 siblings and last survivor of William and Margaret Lowe went to sleep with Jesus at 5:20 P.M. on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at Pineview Lodge in Nipawin. Family members were with her at the time of her passing. At a very early age Auntie contracted polio that left her with limited use of her legs. Grandad and Gran Lowe raised our aunt east of Nipawin teaching her to be independent of her disability and to make her own way in life. She became a seamstress in Moose Jaw and operated her own tailor shop with Pro Sumata; making wedding dresses, alterations and special occasion clothing. After a lengthy courtship, Auntie and Pro were married in 1960 and continued in their tailor shop until his passing in 1969. In 1980 Auntie and Fred Hawkes were married. Fred brought with him an advocacy attitude for the physically challenged. The two campaigned on local, provincial and federal levels for access ramps, door assist, washroom upgrades and anything to aid citizens with mobility issues. The two became well known for their wheel chair dancing and bowling. They enjoyed travelling to other countries, and camping at local campsites became a normal activity for this very active couple. Fred passed away Jan. 3rd, 1990. Murray King and Auntie were married in 1993. Ruth continued in her seamstress business and Murray opened a second hand shop in Moose Jaw. After a fire destroyed their operations the two entered into retirement. After Murray's death in 2010 Ruth relocated back to Nipawin to be with family as the need for assistance to carry on with her disabilities increased. She relied on her nieces and nephews for assistance, guiding her through the bureaucracy of special care homes. Auntie eventually advanced to require the Special Care provisions from Pineveiw Lodge. The staff at Pineview provided loving compassionate care right until her last breath. It was Ruth's desire to be interned as soon as possible after her passing, wishing to be near her parents and husbands. The last few years were lonely times for Ruth as she had outlived most of her friends and all her brothers and sisters. She will be fondly remembered by her nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. A graveside service was held at the Rosedale Cemetery in Moose Jaw on Saturday, April 30, 2016. Memorial donations in Ruth's memory may be made to the Pineview Lodge Activity Fund or a charity of one's choice. To send online condolences please visit www.coventryfuneralservices.ca.
