Father Georges Nyarubwa Hakiza, ofm. (1976 - 2019) It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Father Georges Nyarubwa Hakiza, ofm., serving the diocese of Timmins from 2011 to 2019. Father Georges Nyrubwa Hakiza, ofm. was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the city of Jomba in the province of North Kivu on January 3, 1976, in a family of 11 children, of the marriage of Léonard Nyarumbwa and Léocade Mutuzo. After graduating from kindergarten and primary school, 1988, in Kalima, Province of Maniema, he continued his secondary studies at the Goma Diocese Minor Seminary from September 1988 to 1996. He obtained his post-secondary diploma (State Diploma). In 1996, he was accepted at the Grand Seminary of Buhimba in the Diocese of Goma. During his second year at the National University of Kinshasa, he made contact with the Franciscan friars. He was accepted to begin the postulancy in September of the same year. After completing the postulate in 2000, he made his temporary vows with the Franciscans. He continued his studies in Philosophy. After a Franciscan year with people living with a disability, he began his studies in theology and in 2008 after 4 years, gets his Baccalaureate. He was ordained to the priesthood on July 27, 2008 in Goma in his diocese of origin. He was appointed administrator of the parish Saint Joseph of Kimbulu in the diocese of Butembo-Beni and held this position for 3 years. In 2011, Father Georges arrived in the Diocese of Timmins. From 2011-2017, he was appointed administrator of the parishes Marie-Reine-du-Monde (Matheson), Immaculate-Conception (Val Gagné), St-Laurent (Ramore), Most-Holy-Redeemer (Holtyre). Since July 2017, he has been appointed administrator of the Sacré-Coeur-de-Jésus Parish (New Liskeard). Funeral, presided over by His Exc. Most Reverend Serge Poitras, Bishop of Timmins, will be held on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at 11 a.m., from the St. Laurent Parish, (Ramore), followed by a reception in the basement of the Church. The remains will be received at the St-Laurent Church on Monday, February 4, 2019 at 7 p.m. and visitation will follow at the church until 9 p.m. as well as Tuesday morning from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. Remembrance donations may be offered for Mass intentions for the resting of the soul of Father Georges or for assistance to the Franciscans in their ministry in Congo. The funeral arrangements have been entrusted with the MIRON-WILSON FUNERAL HOME, Cremation and Reception Centre, 150 Balsam St. S., Timmins.
