LaPLANTE, Sister Rita - On June 11th, 2012, at the Monastery of the Precious Blood in Hamilton, Sister Rita LaPlante entered Eternal Life in the peace of the Lord and in the hope of Resurrection. Supported by her Sisters, and life-long friend, Doreen Dumont, she left this world in the 87th year of her life and the 68th of her Religious Profession. Sister Rita is survived by her two brothers, Gerald (Joy) LaPlante of Toronto and Father Vincent LaPlante, OMI of Vancouver, BC, three nieces, Suzanne LaPlante of Montreal, Madelaine (Rick) Earl of Loretto, ON, Margaret (Jim) Freeman of Georgetown, ON and one nephew, Noel (Jill) LaPlante of Barrie, ON as well as grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by her mother, Laura O'Connor who died when Sister was 5 months old, her father Patrick James (Paddy) LaPlante and very devoted step- mother, Anne O'Connor. Sister Rita was born in Ottawa, ON March 3rd, 1926. She graduated from Immaculata High School where she was educated by the Grey Sisters of Pembroke. Shortly after, at age 17, Sister Rita entered the Sisters of the Precious Blood in Pembroke, Ontario. From her earliest years, Sister Rita was a compassionate, faithful friend. She served her community generously in most houses of the Congregation, often carrying the responsibility of leadership in local communities. In addition Sister served several terms as a member of the General Administration of the Congregation. She showed special care and compassion for the dying. Right to the end of her life, Sister was faithfully at the bedside of those preparing for that final journey into Eternal Life. Visitation will be held at the Precious Blood Monastery, 154 Northcliffe Avenue, Dundas on Wednesday, June 13th from 3:00 to 5:00 pm and from 7:00 - 8:30 pm. A Prayer Vigil for Sister will be held at the Monastery at 7:30 pm, Wednesday, June 13th. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Precious Blood Monastery on Thursday, June 14th at 11:00 am.
