Peggy Bernesky

BERNESKY, Peggy - December 7, 1928 - February 26, 2016 Marie Poulsen Johansen (Peggy) was born December 7, 1928 at Pilot Mound, Manitoba, moving with the family to Jordan River, when she was two years old. She quickly became known as Peggy. It is thought it was because Edward teased her of having a peg leg and the name stuck. What we do know for sure, is she did not care for Marie and often corrected people to call her Peggy. Peggy attended Megan School and fondly remembered the life-long friendships she formed there. Peggy took her grade 11 in Tisdale where she boarded with Irene Ubdegrove and Vera Haines. They became very good friends and remained so throughout their lives. She was forever grateful to her mother who supported her through these times with her egg money. She then took a year to become a study-supervisor supervising students, taking correspondence classes, as there was a shortage of teachers after the war. She later worked at the Bank of Montreal until her marriage to Alfred Armand Bernesky on Nov 18, 1953, and moved to Connell Creek, farming and raising a family until their retirement to Arborfield in 1992. On July 30, 2007, Alfred passed away suddenly. Peggy continued to live, independently, in her own home thanks to her many close friends and family, and continued to garden. Even to the end, she never lost her sense of humour. After her fall, she would say to all the care givers, "you should see the other guy". Peggy was predeceased by her husband, Alfred; parents, Manny & Mary; sister, Erma; brother Morris; son-in-law, Abbie Menard; nephew, Kendell Johansen; niece, Carolyn Barnes. Left to cherish her memory: her daughter, Anne (Tony); son, Aaron (Joanne), daughter Bonnie (Byron), grandchildren, Ryan (Amanda) & Kyle Bernesky, Kirk, Eric & Andrea Larson and great-grandchild, Brandon Bernesky; brother, Edward Johansen; sisters-in-law, Irene Lindsey & Irene Cragg, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held at St. Lucy’s Roman Catholic Church in Arborfield on Friday, March 4, 2016 at 2:00 pm with Father Millan Sajonas officiating. Interment followed in Jordan River Cemetery. Memorial donations in Peggy's memory may be made to the Arthritis Society or Heart and Stroke Foundation.
