Dale Filbey

FILBEY, Dale - February 12, 1923 - January 7, 2017 Dale Elmer Filbey was born in Shellbrook, SK on February 12, 1923 to Andrew and Ruth Filbey. He took his schooling in Shellbrook, SK before his family moved to the homestead in Mistatim in 1941. Dale was drafted in 1943 and sent to training camp at Shilo, MB. After 6 months, his regiment, The Royal Winnipeg Rifles (Little Black Devils), was shipped out to Europe. He landed on the beaches of Normandy about 1 week after D-Day. He served in England, France, Belgium, Norway, Holland and Germany. He returned home by boat to Halifax, NS, and was discharged in Regina, SK in February 1946. Dale moved to BC in 1947 before returning to Mistatim, SK, where he met Jean Chase. Dale and Jean were married in Mistatim on June 15, 1948. They celebrated the birth of their daughter Carol in 1949, and then moved to Nipawin, SK where they welcomed the birth of their daughter Sharon in 1951 and son Garry in 1955. Dale went to work for Fall's Drey in Nipawin and shoveled coal for the railway at night. In 1954, he went to work at the Esso Bulk Station. Dale and Jean moved to Prince George, BC in 1970, where Dale was employed as a carpenter at Prince George Pulp & Paper. They returned to Nipawin to enjoy their retirement in May 1995. Dale was a self-taught journeyman carpenter who was proficient at everything from house building to cabinetry. His beautiful handiwork is displayed in the homes of his family. Dale was an avid country music fan. He often picked away on his guitar, banjo or violin. He especially enjoyed listening to Jean, Garry, Scott and Chris play the guitar and sing. Dale was an adored Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Great-Grandfather. He became "Grandpa Dale" to everyone who knew and loved him. Dale is predeceased by his beloved wife Jean, parents Andrew & Ruth Filbey, brothers Walter (Irene) & Beuford (Norma), sister Darlene (Colin), and father and mother-in-law Edwin & Zelma Chase. Left to treasure his memory are his beloved children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family members and friends. He is survived by daughter Carol (Larry), grandson Bob [Ellen (Abigail, Eric)], grandson Steve [Elly (Ethan)], granddaughter Vicki [Glenn (Kalena, Liam)]; daughter Sharon (Bill), granddaughter Dawn [Darryl (Gabriel, Joshua)], grandson Michael [Candace (Kaydence, Cassidy)]; son Garry (Deb), grandson Chris [Joy (Casey)], granddaughter Robin (Cory), grandson Scott. Grandpa, we were so blessed to have you in our lives and we will cherish our memories of you forever. We love you so much and may God bless you until we meet again. The funeral service was held on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the Coventry Funeral Chapel with Lloyd Chase and Brenda Senga officiating. Dale was laid to rest in Mabel Hill Cemetery.
