Dr. Helena (Helen) Niskala

NISKALA, Dr. Helena (Helen) - Passed away peacefully on November 30, 2018 at Three Links Care Centre in Vancouver. Helen is survived by her loving niece Marlene Niskala, her great-nephew Aaron Fogelman (Saralyn) and her great-great nephews Jacob and Finn. Helen will be fondly remembered by relatives in Northern Ontario and Finland and by many friends, colleagues and former students world wide. Helen was predeceased by her mother Annie Heikkila (Verner), her father Seth Niskala and her brother Leo Niskala (Ethel). Helen graduated with a Diploma in Nursing and Tuberculosis Nursing from TW in 1951. She was a lifelong learner and went on to receive her Certificate of Clinical Supervision and Administration from UofT in 1954, her Diploma in Neurological and Neurosurgical Nursing for Nervous Diseases in London, England in 1958, her Bachelor of Nursing in 1964 from McGill University, Montreal, her Master of Sciences in 1968 from the University of California and her Doctor of Education from the UBC in 1976. Helen achieved great success in her career working as a Nurse, Nursing Instructor, researcher, Administrator and she retired as an Associate Professor Emerita from UBC. Helen was the recipient of the Award of Excellence in Nursing Education from RNABC. Helen loved her family, her Northern Ontario roots, her Finnish heritage and her life long and newer friendships. She enjoyed studying and working with Nurses dedicated to improving the health of clients and patients. She was a proud supporter of Nursing history. Helen loved to travel and thoroughly enjoyed conversations with others. She will be dearly missed. As a family we want to thank the teams at Three Links Care Centre for the excellent standard of care they provided to Helen over the last 6 years. At Helenís request there will be no funeral service.13314990
