John Doherty

DOHERTY, John (Jake) Gerard John (Jake) G. Doherty peacefully passed Saturday November 19, 2018 in Ottawa at the age of 82. Survived by 4 children, Denise, Françoise, Conall, Liam and 12 grand-children. Predeceased by wife Monique Doherty (née Mousseau). He will be missed dearly by family and friends. Born in Moncton New Brunswick and raised in St-John where he began his love of writing and stories. Graduate of St-Francis Xavier University and Columbia University (MJ). A reporter, editor and publisher at the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times of Canada, Hamilton Spectator, Owen Sound Sun Times and Kingston Whig Standard. Retired in Owen Sound. His assignments covered all of Canada and countries like Brazil, Japan, N. Ireland, S. Africa and N. Korea. Jake spent a life exploring Canada with family and friends, camping, cross-country skiing, hiking, laughing and telling stories. He loved the natural world and charmed everyone he met. Honoured with an international prize for his literacy through newspapers program. He served on many boards, from the MS Society to Symphonies. After retiring he wrote/ published several books and short stories. A great believer in volunteering, the arts, music and the pursuit of knowledge, and had a passion for hockey, football all things Irish including a great beer. Jake lived a happy, kind and adventurous life. Mass 11:30am Friday Dec. 7 at St. Joseph Church, 64 Church St. E., Acton. Reception at Red Harp Pub 1 to 4pm, 137 Mill St. E. Acton.
