David Oscar Eugene Merritt

MERRITT, David Oscar Eugene - Died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Greenville, North Carolina on October 15, 2015 at the age of 81. A memorial service will be conducted Sunday at 4 pm in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Dave was born on July 24, 1934 in Thorold, Ontario, Canada to Eugene and Alice Merritt, the oldest of four boys. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force for ten years before embarking on a career that would take him from Canada to Roanoke, Virginia and then finally to Greenville where he resided for more than forty years until his death. Dave was a longtime employee of what is now known as NACCO Materials Handling Group, Inc., from which he retired in 1998 after several decades of service. Dave was a meticulous engineer by trade, living his life by the mantra "measure twice, cut once." He valued hard work and virtually everything he did reflected that deeply rooted ethic. Never one to be comfortable sitting still, Dave spent most of his leisure time doing chores around the house and working with his hands refinishing old furniture and antiques, among other hobbies. Although not one to get overly sentimental, Dave was very proud of his family and deeply loved and cared for each and every one of them. He will be greatly missed by many. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eileen Eberhardt Merritt; two sons, Wayne R. Merritt and Kevin D. Merritt (Rita); and his brother John Merritt. Dave is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marilyn L. Merritt, of the home; children, Laurie M. Dilday (Clay) of Ahoskie, David E. Merritt (Kristy) of Greenville, Darlene M. Anderson of Douglas, Georgia, Colin D. Merritt (Avery) of High Point and Karen Merritt-Robertson (James) of Jacksonville; grandchildren Alicia Farmer, R. Brent Hignite, Brittany Oliver, Meredith Merritt, Tanner Merritt, Josh Harris, Melissa Merritt, Allison Grady, Kelsie Murphy, Kayla Anderson, Garrett Anderson, Jackson Merritt, Anna Beth Merritt, Zachary Robertson, Madeline Robertson, Colby Robertson, Declan Robertson and Brayden Robertson; great grandchildren Ashton, Brooke, Lee, Chase, Corbin, Colton, Braelyn, Michael, Diego, Lance, Jr., Mya and Marcus; and brothers Donald Merritt and Daniel Merritt (Beverly) both of Ontario, Canada. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dave's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to your local Boys & Girls Club or a charity of your choosing. The family would like to thank the staff of AseraCare for their kind and attentive care. Online condolences at www.wilkersonfuneralhome.com12987380

Dan and Donald,

I have fond memories of your family. I am sorry for your loss.

I hope living in Thorold and going to Thorold High have fond memories for you too.

I have vivid memories of your hard working parents, their prolific garden and the foster children they took care of tirelessly...especially the baby with hydrocephalus. I remember often sitting on the big rock on the edge of your property. Thanks to your whole family for being such great neighbours and good friends.
