SCHMIDT, Henry J. - July 2, 1940 - February 8, 2011 - Dr. Henry J. Schmidt, president emeritus of Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary and former professor of Evangelism and Mission, passed away peacefully surrounded by family Tuesday evening, February 8, in Reedley, California. Henry was born into a farming family on July 2, 1940 in Grande Prairie, AB, Canada. His life was one marked by a deep commitment to Christian service, love of family and friends, a witty sense of humor, and enthusiasm for hockey. He also had a zeal for learning. He graduated with a Bachelor of Theology from Mennonite Brethren Bible College in Winnipeg, Manitoba, a second bachelorís degree in psychology from Fresno Pacific College, and a Master of Divinity from the Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary (MBBS) in Fresno, California. In 1981, Henry earned a PhD from the Religion and Social Ethics department of the University of Southern California. Henry served the US Mennonite Brethren Church in such roles as pastor, conference evangelist and moderator, and leader of the Church Mission Institute for cross-cultural missionaries. He was MBBS faculty from 1976 to 2003 and president from 1993 to 2003. Henry had often said that this demanding work could not have been possible without the support of his wife Elvera. He is remembered for innovative courses that included a focus on cross-cultural experiences and service work in local community agencies, a keen intelligence, his pastoral nature, and his love for the mission of the seminary. Henry is survived by Elvera, his wife of fifty years, daughter Debra Brady, son-in-law Martin Brady, grandsons Nigel, Miles, and Ian Brady of Sacramento, daughter Laura Roberts, son-in-law Mark Roberts, granddaughters Clara and Lena Roberts of Fresno, and James Lee, who became like a son, and wife Gaylene. He is also survived by his sister Mary Thiessen and husband Jake of Grande Prairie, AB his brother David Schmidt and wife Evelyn of Wembley, AB, brothers-in-law David Thiessen of Grande Prairie, AB, Harry Bauer and wife Jean of Edmonton, AB, and sister-in-law Erna Schmidt of Langley, BC. Henry is preceded in death by sisters Flora Thiessen and Helen Bauer and brother John Schmidt. Henry J. Schmidt had a great heart for people, a powerful vision for the churchís role in a changing world, a commitment to mentoring students and church leaders, and a passion for his Lord. A service celebrating his life will be held on Wednesday February 16, at 10:00 a.m. in the Reedley MB Church, 1362 L Street, Reedley CA 93654. Remembrances may be made to Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary Schmidt Multi-Cultural Scholarship fund and to the Living Legacy fund at Palm Village Retirement Community.

Another GREAT MAN OD GOD gone home. Great memories of Henry in the Peace Country, camp and the outdoor hockey games!! He and brother John made a great pair.
