LEES, William Carey - May 28th, 1928 - December 17th, 2016 With sadness, and yet joy for a life well-lived, we announce that early Saturday morning Carey stepped into the presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ. Dad grew up near Beatty, SK with a love for hockey but a greater love for the Lord. After Bible School he married his childhood sweetheart, Shirley Menzies. They worked with SIM International in Niger, West Africa for 38 years in building and ministry projects. In retirement, Carey volunteered with Gideons International, the International Friendship Program and his local church. He had a deep faith in and love for God, and his caring and compassionate life impacted many people. After years near the Sahara Desert, away from hockey, he was delighted to return to the ice when he retired in Saskatoon. He played in the 60+ league until he reluctantly hung up his skates at the age of 85. Carey will be dearly missed by his five children, Judy (Gordon) Evans, Jerry (Wendy) Lees, Joanne (Dave) Gartner, Jeanne (Jim) Willis, Joyce (Roy) Nickel; 17 grandchildren and their spouses; 12 great-grandchildren; his sister Lois Evans; and his brothers Lloyd (Doreen), Archie (Rita) and Charles (Myrna). He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Shirley (January 30, 2016); parents; five siblings; and great-granddaughter Alyssa Evans. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the staff and caregivers at Prairie Spring Care Home for the kind, compassionate care they provided Dad over the past few months. A Celebration of Carey's Life was held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. at Lawson Heights Alliance Church (159 Pinehouse Dr.) in Saskatoon. A private family Graveside Service was held prior to the service at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation to SIM International ( or Gideons International ( in Carey's honour.
